Australia's leading sustainable architecture and landscape design magazine for inspirational stories on local and international houses, gardens and profiles.

We have no theme covering this issue, just five houses, two gardens and a pile of other design initiatives that express individual needs, and tackle requirements relating to location, landscape, community, local fabric, waste and budgetary restraints. It’s a callout to architects and landscape architects, designers, gardeners, farmers and visionaries, working hard to meet the needs and desires of individuals, communities and the environment.

Every issue brings stories of passion and commitment, this one is no exception. Take our cover house, which came about after the architect, Jason Gibney, his clients and their young kids went on a car trip together to the bush site. Patience and collaboration with local fire authorities brought insight and resulted in a unique yet simple solution that allows the beloved landscape in close.

Or the house designed by Philip Stejskal with input from his clients on a block carved from the backyard of a Fremantle villa. In a nod to the industrial nature of the nearby docks, simple materials of zincalume cladding and wire mesh fencing give the home character and familiarity. Five Mile Radius is a team of architects and designers who work tirelessly to produce work of great integrity, considering all options in their commitment to sustainability.

In Not Wasted we look at their cafe? fit-out that diverted a staggering 1.7 tonnes of recycled material from landfill, cutting 84 per cent of the embodied carbon of a standard fit-out. It should serve as a template for all to follow.

And the tale of three horticulture students who set out to establish a not-for-profit urban farm but along the way became the solution to a community in need. It’s a privilege to be the sharer of stories like these six times a year.
